Tenth Muse is inspired by the life of Jauna Ines de la Cruz, a 17th century poet and nun who lived in Spanish New Mexico. Sor Juana joined the nunnery in order to avoid marriage and continue her love of learning. She wrote several controversial texts and poems that gained her much notoriety and even some unique nicknames: la decima musa and la fenix de México. Tenth Muse Bakery is devoted to continuing her crusade for feminism and cooking by running a women’s collective that provides employment for women in need while also teaching them important life skills and offering free career counseling.
